Dublin Air Traffic Continues Upward Trend
The commercial terminal traffic for Dublin, Shannon and Cork airports increased by +3.5% in September 2012, when compared to September 2011. This growth in international arrivals and departures was largely driven by traffic increases in Dublin Airport (up 5.5%).
This is the second month in a row that the Authority has observed continued growth in this sector of traffic, which is primarily being driven by a significant rise in international arrivals and departures at Dublin Airport.
Individually, the September 2012 figures for the three State airports, when compared to the same month in the previous year are:
- Dublin up by 5.5%, with an average of 468 daily commercial movements.
- Cork down by 0.5%, with an average of 65 commercial daily movements.
- Shannon down 7.3%, with an average of 55 commercial daily movements.
There was a decrease of 1.9% in Ireland’s en-route traffic movements (flights that pass through Irish airspace but do not land in Ireland) during September 2012, in comparison to September 2011. Similarly, North Atlantic Communications flights (Europe /North America flights) saw a decrease of 3.8% in September 2012, when compared to September 2011.
There was an average of 1,547 daily flights during September 2012, with the busiest day being 2nd September with 1,695 flights in Irish airspace. Due to the reductions in en-route traffic, total flights in Irish airspace for September have actually decreased by 0.30%, when compared to September 2011.
Data from EUROCONTROL shows that six of Ireland’s Top Ten ‘Airport Pairs’ for September 2012 showed growth, when compared to September 2011. The IAA bills airlines for the use of air navigation services when passing through Irish airspace or landing at the State airports. ‘Airport Pairs’ refers to air routes that use these services.
The most significant growth was for New York – London/Heathrow (+13.7%) and London/Heathrow – Chicago O’Hare International (+12%).
