Encouraging growth in Irish air traffic indicators

15 Aug 2012

13 August 2012 – An analysis of the July 2012 data from EUROCONTROL shows that seven of Ireland’s top ten ‘Airport Pairs’ showed growth, when compared to July 2011. The IAA bills airlines for the use of air navigation services when passing through Irish airspace or landing at the State airports. ‘Airport Pairs’ refers to air routes that use these services. The largest airport pair, “New York – London Heathrow” grew by 10.5%. Significant growth was evident on other airport pairs, including “Paris Charles de Gaulle – New York” (+19.3%) and “London Heathrow – Chicago O’Hare International” (+18.5%).

There was an increase of 0.20% in Ireland’s en-route traffic movements (flights that pass through Irish airspace but do not land in Ireland) during July 2012, in comparison to July 2011. Furthermore, on a year to-date basis, the growth from January to July 2012 was 0.50%, compared to the same period last year.

The IAA’s analysis of North Atlantic Communications flights (Europe /North America flights), however, saw a decrease of 1.44% in July 2012, when compared to July 2011, but from January to July 2012, the cumulative decrease has been just 0.15%.

In terms of traffic numbers at the major Irish airports, the situation remains difficult. The July 2012 figures for the main airports, when compared to the same month last year were;

  • Commercial terminal flights at Dublin, down by 0.9%. However, following an encouraging performance during June, the cumulatively growth for the June/July period was 0.26% compared to the same period last year.
  • Commercial terminal flights at Cork, down by 3.1%.
  • Commercial terminal flights at Shannon, down 4.0%.
