IAA Deploys Advanced Telecommunication Technology

19 Sep 2012

The Irish Aviation Authorities (IAA) North Atlantic Communications (NAC) Centre, Ballygirreen, is the Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) centre for Ireland. It’s part of a global aviation data communication network linking airline offices, Air Traffic Control, and meteorological services.

On the 18th September, the Ballygirreen facility successfully migrated to an advanced new AFTN Message Handling System (MHS) known as Frequentis smartMessenger. The new system is both an AFTN Switch and ATS Message Handling System (AMHS). This is the fourth upgrade of AFTN Systems in Ballygirreen since 1967 and represents a huge leap forward in technology.

This system manages the storage and transmission of aviation data essential for the provision of safe and efficient Air Traffic Services (ATS). TAFTN Project Teamhe system supports the AFTN and AMHS services as defined by International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), as well as Eurocontrol Community Specifications and regional standards. It also fully complies with all the EC safety and interoperability regulations.

Director of Operations and ATM Strategy, Mr. Peter Kearney said, “The new system is a highly reliable field proven solution, installed at a number of locations around the world. This is part of the IAA’s continued strategy to invest in advanced technological solutions that help provide safe, enhanced and cost effective services to our customers.”
