January 2011 air traffic statistics optimistic
16 February 2011: Air traffic through Irish airspace increased by 5.1% in January 2011, compared to January 2010, according to statistics for flight traffic released by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA).
On average, there were 1,275 flights in Irish controlled airspace every day in January.
Enroute traffic, which represents flights passing through Irish controlled airspace, increased 9.4% in January 2011.
North Atlantic flights between Europe and USA also rose by 4% in January 2011, compared to the same period in 2010.
Traffic in and out of the three State airports in January 2011 were not as strong:
-
Commercial terminal flights at Dublin were up by only +0.7%
-
Commercial terminal flights at Cork were down -6.9%
-
Commercial terminal flights at Shannon were down -23.8%.
Mr. Eamonn Brennan, Chief Executive, IAA, said that the level of air traffic activity in general augured well for the airline industry during 2011.
"We are particularly glad to see 7 of the top 10 routes (city pairs) through our airspace showing positive growth in January 2011 compared to January 2010. The Newark to/from London Heathrow route was up almost 43%, the New York JFK to/from London Heathrow route was up over 20% and the Dublin to/from Gatwick route was up almost 18%. This growth during the worst winter Ireland, the UK and the east coast of USA experienced in years, indicates that we have reason to be optimistic this year."
