Overall trend in air traffic optimistic despite decline in February
11 March 2011: Despite a strong performance in January, air traffic on the North Atlantic declined by 0.8% in February when compared to February 2010. The average daily number of flights on the North Atlantic in February was 716. These are flights which do not touch down in Ireland but instead fly through Irish airspace, en route between Europe and North America.
Air traffic at the three State airports for January and February 2011, when compared to the same period last year, was as follows:
a) Commercial terminal flights at Dublin were down by 0.5%
b) Commercial terminal flights at Cork were down 12%
c) Commercial terminal flights at Shannon were down 17.2%
Commenting on the February statistics, Eamonn Brennan, Chief Executive, IAA, said; "these figures are disappointing given the 9.4% increase in enroute traffic which was registered just last month. However there is reason to be optimistic and the overall trend for 2011 is expected to show positive growth. Indeed, six of Ireland's top ten airport pairs showed positive growth in February when compared to the same period last year."
